Like many of you, I am not entirely happy about LJ's new ToS, though I'm not sure they're objectively any worse than the ToS of, say, Facebook. I mean, yes, there's the "subject to Russian law" thing, but I am not in Russia, and I suspect that I have at least as much to worry about with my online content being subject to US law under the current regime, because my country is a lot more likely to co-operate with the US government. Realistically, I suspect the biggest worry is that LJ will delete stuff without warning, so, while I'm not going to delete my account and haven't completely made up my mind to stop crossposting, I am going to disable comments on posts from now on, so there won't be any LJ-only content that I might lose. If you're reading on LJ, you should be able to log in and comment on the DW versions of posts using your LJ account as an OpenID, or you can sign up for a DW account and use that to comment. (If you have a DW account and I haven't given you access there please comment on the DW version of this post and let me know who you are on LJ if it's not obvious.)

Yes, I am not particularly fussed. The "subject to owner country's law" and the official version being only the version in that language, with a not-great translation, if there is a translation at all - I bet DW doesn't have one for Chinese, for example, and I signed the one for fanfiktion.de without any proper comprehension - is completely normal. Though people may dislike the content of the TOS, that's not the same thing.

Though I may be blase partly because one of the things I had some entertaining discussion about in Barcelona was this very issue, and how institutions were spending millions of pounds with overseas partners but still ultimately couldn't actually know that the document they had an "official" translation of actually said the same thing as the one that was lodged in the other country.

I have deleted mine, but I'd been pondering doing so for ages because I haven't even bothered with cross-posting for a very long time. Housekeeping more than paranoia - hacking worries me more than the Russian government this week.

I'd been thinking about turning off comments on LJ for a while anyway; I find it mildly annoying to have the comments split across the two sites, and have been thinking of DW as my "primary" journal for a while now. And I am concerned that LJ might just disappear one of these days, so only having commenting here will save me from having to remember to import comments every so often.
