I spent most of yesterday in bed, much of it feeling too exhausted even to sit up and read a book.

Today I managed to get up and put clothes on, and then flopped on the sofa under a blanket and watched The Emperor's New Groove followed by Kiki's Delivery Service and then put the 2020 Emma* on in the background and read Sandman.

I've been doing daily lateral flow tests which keep coming out negative, but even for January this really isn't normal. I suppose it could be actual burnout, though covid still seems more likely...

I feel very much like this (even unto the LFTs which keep surprising me by coming back negative).

it'll probably just be a case of resting for a week or so and then gradually starting to feel better...

It very much sounds like you need to do so, whatever the cause. I hope you can keep getting some rest and give yourself time to come round.

(I was sceptical about the 2020 Emma, but ended up thinking that it was very well done.)

I wouldn’t discount burnout. I can feel myself skirting it.

Of course, it could also be influenza, or a really nasty cold...

I wouldn't discount a mix of burnout and the rather nasty cold that's doing the rounds (surprise, surprise, other viruses still active....). Hope you feel less exhausted soon.

A. has had the local cold, she was laid out flat for two days, either side of staggering into work to deal with a crisis; it sounds grim and pretty indistinguishable from a "mild" case of Omicron from what I hear. She did a week of LFT and also went for a PCR so pretty confident it wasn't COVID.

Burnout does tend to lay you open to every infection going!

I know that the plural of anecdote is not data, but I know so many people now who've had obvious covid symptoms after known close-hand exposure and tested negative throughout (LFT and PCR) makes me think that we will discover at some point that there's something about omicron that can't be picked up by some tests that catch other variants. Usual caveats: not an epidemiologist and my acquaintanceship is not a statistically significant sample.

Also Josh Winfield who had cold symptoms for nine days after having spent Christmas day inside with his parents who then tested positive two days later. Occam's razor holds.

I was convinced that I was going to find out in 2024 that I'd been doing them wrong all along, but then when I actually did have covid I did 14 positive tests in a row, so I now think that if I can do them then anyone can.

For what it's worth, I spent all of last week feeling much like that, only with bonus added pain that I thought was a pulled muscle, and it has turned out to be shingles. So if you think you are getting a rash, book a GP appointment quick - there is an antiviral, but it's time limited.

I do hope you feel better soon. In many ways if it *were* Covid, it would be better as you could justifiably take the week off to recover, whereas if it's just a vague "virus" (which is what it sounlike) you probably won't, even though you should! Can you get the doctor to sign you off for a few days?

It does sound very much like burnout. I spent most of last year getting over the worst of mine, and it's hard - you basically need to learn to accept when you can't do things, and that it's okay not to do things, and not beat yourself up over all the stuff that's not being done and just *rest*. Because you're you're refilling a dangerously empty cup, and that takes time.
