Happy "Blue Monday is a marketing ploy" Monday (18/365)

I'm not sure I've actually seen anyone claiming that Blue Monday is actually a thing recently, but every year I see multiple people pointing out how it was made up by a marketing company to persuade people to book holidays. (That may be why I haven't seen anything about it this year. Who's going to risk booking a holiday in a global pandemic when the odds aren't looking good for actually being able to go on it?)

Anyway, all the days blur together these days, and how can you say one is more or less miserable than the rest? (Although I am actually feeling particularly glum today, even by the standards of January in a pandemic.)

As an antidote to the gloom, I give you a stoat on a trampoline.

I’ve been feeling thoroughly blue today, and I’m not even working! The stoat on a trampoline is cheering though.

The stoat is delightful. I have suggested to my mother that she should get a trampoline for the stoat that visits their garden.

I did get us Interrail tickets in the end of December sale, but they can be used within eleven months of purchase (plus I paid extra to be able to get the full refund if necessary). I do think it's worth booking nice things with a fixed date to look forward to, but this year... not so much. I should book some leave on general principle, though.

We are supposed to be going to the Yorkshire Dales in March (postponed from last year) but I think it's highly unlikely to actually happen.

I'm supposed to be going to Mull, likewise postponed (I've not even considered going to Norway). I just can't see it, unfortunately.

I'm not entirely sure I'd want to even if we technically could, given how much more nerve-wracking being in a pandemic makes everything, but I'm not at all convinced we'll even be out of lockdown by then.

To be fair I talked to a very sad client who then texted me apologetically later to say that she'd discovered it was Blue Monday and all was now explained.

Obviously, it's a dismal and depressing time of year anyway, and current events are not exactly cheering, but that doesn't mean any one particular day is worse than the surrounding ones!

I had several emails saying, i's Blue Monday, cheer yourself up by ...' usually by buying something. As you say, currently every day is blue. I like the stoat, though.

I haven't had any. Clearly I have managed to unsubscribe from all the retailers who send that kind of email!

I have never heard of Blue Monday. And EasyJet keep sending me emails wanting me to book package hotels in Spain no matter what day it is. Sometimes I am tempted to book one just to have something happening to look forward to even if I had to cancel it but also I can't envisage ever going anywhere any more.

I seem to see discussion of it come up every year!

Apparently people who are high on the vaccine priority list are booking lots of holidays, which I think is very silly of them really. But then again, I'm not sure most of the rest of the world exists any more. I know I know people who claim to be in it, but still.
