Instead of a nice Sunday walk, I have been to Barts to visit my dad, who is really not very well at all right now. I have also discovered that at some point during his operation on Wednesday the socks he was wearing, which were the pair I knitted him after he complained of cold feet when I visited him last time he was in Barts, were removed and are now lost.

And now I’m on a train home which is due to stop at Wembley Stadium just after the end of a major football match. (ETA - it wasn't too bad in the end; although a frankly alarming number of people got onto the train at Wembley as far as I could see they were all good-humoured and well-behaved, with no shouting, singing or other rowdy behaviour, and enough of them got off again shortly after at Northolt Park or Ruislip that for most of the journey the train was only busy, and not absolutely jam-packed. And I had podcasts and knitting rather than attempting to read on a loud and crowded train.)

To say I’m feeling a bit fragile right now would be, frankly, something of an understatement.

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad, and about the socks, which seem like one of those nominally-smallish things which somehow become representative of and worse than the big thing, because they are easier to comprehend and seem so unfair on top of the big thing. I hope he is back home and with warmer feet soon.

It's horrible to keep seeing him like this (and he seems worse every time I see him, though this time he had just had surgery whereas last time I went to Barts he was waiting for surgery), and finding out that something I'd made to try to bring a little comfort had been lost really didn't help.

Thank you. My mum has at least updated today to say he's being sent back to Norwich, which is much easier for her to visit and where they know him and all the facts about his case, so that's a relief all round.

I totally understand about the socks - I kept making lemon barley water for my father (not quite the same league, I do so agree), and I'm not sure how much of it he got to drink once we'd gone home.... I do hope your father makes a complete recovery.
