It was their first house; they wanted it to be perfect. Every evening they pored over color charts, carpet samples, furniture catalogs. This was their home, the place they'd chosen to bring up the family that - surely - would be theirs soon.
It worried him, though, that somehow he and Sandra couldn't seem to agree on the carpet for the dining room. He favoured a soft oatmealy beige; she argued that it would show up every mark, that it would be far better to go for a smokier, darker shade.
He looked at the sample she'd handed him. He still didn't like the color, but she was right; kids were tough on flooring. And they would have kids soon; of course they would. So it would be dumb to pick carpets that would only have to be replaced in a couple of years, especially when he wasn't having much luck finding a better job.
"Okay", he said. "If this is what you want, then it's fine by me. I'm comfortable with-" he glanced at the tag on the swatch "-I'm comfortable with 'Morally Gray'."
