I was going to make a start on a new shirt today, but the weather is forecast to be in the high twenties for the next few days and I decided that what I really needed was more shorts, so I spent the day squeezing a pair out of what I was pleased to discover was just enough leftover dark teal cotton twill. (And when I say "just enough", I mean that the first fold of one of the hems is a bit wobbly because there wasn't quite enough fabric, and I had to sew up a cut into the edge of one of the pieces, fortunately mostly in the seam allowance, because there was no flexibility at all.)

A white person with short grey hair and glasses stands in a garden wearing a purple t-shirt with white printing and a pair of dark teal knee-length shorts.

I never used to wear shorts, except maybe for exercise (though I've got more wary of walking in shorts as I worry about ticks), but, having stopped wearing skirts, I found that there was a vacancy for something to wear when it was so hot having my legs covered with trousers is uncomfortable. I suppose I could have gone for cropped trousers instead, but shorts take less fabric and I do often find that I can squeeze them out of leftovers. And actually, I find I rather like them. They are cool and comfortable, and if anyone has a problem with a slightly fat middle-aged woman wearing just over the knee shorts, well, that's on them, not me.

Nice shorts! I don't wear shorts much in the UK due to insufficient warmth, but they are very useful garments on the right occasion. Ticks, OTOH, are a concern. I tend to wear heavy-duty insect repellent and am not normally walking much in long grass, but it is ridiculous that there is a lyme disease vaccine for dogs, but not humans. Perhaps post-Covid someone will see a market for one. I'd certainly pay.

Taking PantsNo1 in the other direction, my pattern arrived yesterday, but I hadn't realised that they were cropped. How much do you find that you need to lengthen them when you are making standard length trousers for yourself? Not that they are first on my agenda, as I've decided I want to tackle a dress so need to start now to make sure I finish it while there is still some summer left!

If anyone has a problem with that, they need to get over themselves!

Love the t shirt! :o)

I'm a good twenty years older than you, and I wear shorts in public on occasion, so.....

That's what I figure about wearing shorts. Back in the day it was anathema, anathema! To wear shorts and not have a tan. Well, how many of those fashion police have since had melanomas taken off? I figure, it someone doesn't like my pale old legs then they can look away.

Your outfit looks cool, comfy and plenty stylish for summer!

High five!

(I shaved mine exactly once when I was fourteen, and a loutish upperclassman loudly made fun of my hairy legs in class. I used my dad's razor to shave, and the next day he said the same thing. I never did it again.)

Very smart! And isn't it satisfying getting a garment out of the minimum of fabric!

They look great!

I am hoping to get my garden to a point where I can wear shorts in it without ending up with scratched legs but between ticks, vegetation and my legs really not liking the sun these days, I don't expect I shall wear them much in public. I have definitely got to the age where I shall wear what I'm comfortable in and sod anyone who doesn't approve though!

I actually find cropped or full length light linen trousers more comfortable than bare legs when it's really hot, but that's because the inside of my knees break out in eczema if I sit with sweaty skin against sweaty skin for long.

I think I've worn a skirt about twice since we got Wilbur. I got rid of a bunch to charity and have only kept four, two of which are autumn/winter skirts that I always wear with tights. My summer skirts may well go to charity next year if I go the whole of this summer without wearing them yet again.

I have got shorts for the first time in years (bought, denim shorts) and am thoroughly enjoying showing off my fat, white legs to the world.
