St David's Day (60/365)

Somehow we have already managed to get through two months of 2021, and while winter isn't quite over yet (unless you're a meteorologist and think seasons change on the first of the month instead of mid-month in a much less handy way) there are definitely signs that spring isn't far off. There's a real warmth to the sun now, at least when there is sun, and after a few warm days the snowdrops have all withered and, appropriately for St David's Day, the daffodils are coming into bloom.



I often walk past this tree stump and have been amused to observe the ever-changing collection of small plastic toys that occupy the hollow at the top of it. A couple of weeks ago I noticed there were also some green shoots poking out, and today there were daffodils. I do sometimes wonder who puts the things there, and why. To amuse people walking by? An informal toy exchange (though it's quite a way from the houses)? A shrine to the old gods?

Is it geocaching? You have to locate the location on your walk and then you take one small thing and leave a different small thing. There is one in a hedge on one of my nearby walk routes. It's a plastic bag containing usually pencil stubs, plastic daleks and marbles. It is a way of enticing children on walks.

Oh, it could be, though I thought geocaches were normally at least a bit hidden.

This is true. How tall is it? Is it hidden if you are two? But you're right it could just be one of those things that evolved like where people bash coins into tree trunks and now everyone feels they have to do it for luck.

I've downloaded the geocaching app (I do think it sounds interesting) and it does say there is a geocache near there, but I don't know if this is it. The stump is about three feet tall (ish) - kind of chest height for me? - but the things in it are really visible to anyone who is three feet tall or more.

Round us there are a number of 'fairy houses' on tree stumps and the like, where decorations change from week to week and different small objects visit, but there doesn't seem to be a house/door on your stump.

We have fairy doors along the path out to Begbroke that I sometimes walk along (I have to confess to not getting them at all), but this one definitely doesn't have a door and there aren't any others nearby.

It's possible, of course, that it's grown up entirely organically. Maybe someone picked up a dropped toy and put it there and other people just followed suit.

I do feel more engaged with DW and people here, though finding things to post can be a struggle sometimes!
