Dear Nicola
I'm writing you as my MP and as a member of the majority party in Parliament following the Leave vote in Thursday's referendum. On both a personal and a professional level (I work for the University of Oxford, as do so many of your constituents) this was not the result I hoped for, but while I would love to see the decision rolled back I'd also be fearful that a second referendum would only increase the anger and division which has so badly damaged our country during the first campaign.
Instead, I'm writing to ask you, as a Member of Parliament and a member of the Conservative Party, to do everything that you can to ensure that David Cameron's successor as leader of the Party and as Prime Minister is someone who is moderate and sensible, and who is committed to negotiating the best possible exit deal for the UK and to working tirelessly to try to heal the wounds the referendum campaign has left throughout the country. One of the things that I, and I'm sure millions of my fellow Remain voters, most fear is that the country will be led through the negotiations by one of the leaders of the Leave campaign, leaders whose actions and words throughout the campaign have shown that they have no understanding of the vital importance of maintaining our academic and trade links with the rest of Europe and little or no regard for the economic consequences of our actions, and who will never be trusted as leaders by the 48% of people who voted for Remain. I'd therefore like to ask you to give your support to a candidate who can steer the country through the very difficult times that lie ahead free of the tarnish of association with the Leave campaign, and who can engage with supporters of both sides in the difficult task of building a new Britain.
