Stephanie Burgis's Scales and Sensibility is a Regency romance with dragons; small, brightly coloured dragons which are just the right size to perch on a fashionable lady's shoulder, and no fashionable lady would be seen without one.

Elinor Tregarth is not a fashionable lady. She is a poor relation, reliant on the charity of her overbearing uncle, passive aunt and dreadful, spoiled cousin Penelope, and when she runs away with Penelope's abused dragon mere days before her cousin's debut, her only thought is to get as far away as possible. However, things don't work out quite as she'd hoped...

Scales and Sensibility is a charming and often very funny romantic comedy. Burgis has been releasing a chapter a week for Patreon supporters in advance of the novel's publication on 4 October, and I've loved having each new instalment arrive in my inbox on a Saturday morning; it's been a wonderful way to start the weekends, and I'm sorry not to have any more to look forward to. However, while Elinor's story is complete, I know that there are two sequels planned, focusing on her two sisters, and look forward to reading those when they are available.
