Reading: Extracurricular Activities
Apr. 30th, 2018 07:24 pmYoon Ha Lee's Extracurricular Activities is a novelette set in the same universe as his Machineries of Empire trilogy and providing a glimpse of a younger, more carefree Shuos Jedao, many years before Hellspin Fortress, as he leads a mission to recover a missing undercover agent.
Stripped of the complex political machinations of the main trilogy, this is an entertaining space romp which reminded me quite a lot of Bujold (the young Jedao also reminded me of Miles Vorkosigan). It's very entertaining and I loved all the little details about everyday life in the heptarchate - games, relationships, cooking, entertainment, and the banning of knitting needles from classes at the Shuos Academy - as well as the diversity of the future Lee writes about. Although it's a prequel to Ninefox Gambit and Raven Stratagem, I wouldn't recommend it to someone who didn't know the series, but as an extra glimpse of a favourite character it was truly delightful.
