The Thousand Autumns... is actually pretty much a straight historical novel as far as I remember. I enjoyed it in a quiet way (although I have a sneaky feeling it is cleverer if you understand Go but it's not a game I've ever learnt) but Cloud Atlas is the only other of his books I've ever got around to reading and I also found some of the storylines very tedious.
