New shirt (150/365)

I cut out the fabric for a shirt a few weeks ago, but for various reasons didn't really get much of the sewing done until this weekend. At which point it struck me that if I added the collar stand and just left off the collar, I'd end up with a granddad shirt, and maybe that would look quite nice, actually.

A white person with short grey hair and glasses stands in a garden wearing a purple collarless shirt with short sleeves.

I think it does look quite nice.

It does look nice indeed.

I am making a shirt dress but found I hadn't cut out the collar stand at all and also that I had (unusually) thrown all the spare fabric away. I ordered more (and 4 more chunks of exciting fabric at the same time, oops but also bonus) and now it has come, it is not quite the same colour so I am going to attempt pinching it from the bottom half of the front facing. Tonight I am taking the sleeves off and pinning them on the opposite arms. I thought very hard about where the cuff opening needed to go and I was wrong.

I couldn't tell the difference between my front and back notches.

One of my favourite bits in a book is The Battle of Wednesday Week when the 16 year-old new American stepsister is trying to mend tensions by making the English stepsister a shirt and cuts two left sleeves and then borrows the car to buy more fabric and gets stopped for driving under the age of 17 without a UK licence. Shirt sleeves are difficult to get right and it's a mistake that ends up making everything worse.
