Saturday discussion post: never say never (44/365)

A few weeks ago, my swimming friends and I watched a documentary about ice swimming and all agreed that we probably drew the line at breaking ice to get into the water.

We should probably all have realised that that was a perfectly good theoretical position, but as soon as there was actually ice to break we'd all be far too curious about what it would be like to stay out.

A view across the surface of a lake with broken pieces of ice floating on the water and solid ice visible further out.

It turns out ice swimming is amazing (even if it was mostly treading water in a small cleared space). We spent eight minutes bobbing around, breaking off chunks of ice to make a swimming space, laughing delightedly and finding the bemusement of passers-by utterly hilarious.

So, is there anything you've sworn you wouldn't do right up until the opportunity to try it presented itself?

I always said I'd never move to London.

Hrmpf.

I mean, there are aspects of London I like - I can get a great range of vegetables and spices, and it's handy for Forbidden Planet; I love Kew Gardens, and I *do* appreciate being able to walk to the supermarket (none of these things apply during Covid, of course).

But otherwise, I hate it.

Unfortunately, I love my husband very much, and he loves having a regular income, and we both love being able to pay all of our bills, so... we live in London.

We spent seven years in London when we first met and I'd sworn the same thing as you- falling in love does that sort of thing. :o)

He'd been there for sixteen when we met although he's a Scot. After seven years, I needed to get back out to my home county of Kent.

We both continued working in town until we retired five years back and we escaped to rural north Shropshire).

London's a great place to visit, but.........

:O I love swimming, but I can't imagining breaking ice to do it! That is dedication!

I do not think it is quite captured by "right up until the opportunity to try it presented itself" but I was pretty darn certain I'd never stop wearing high heels, and now nothing would get me back into them.

From the ankles up I still look the same, albeit with more work.

Also yes this would certainly be how I’d do it!
