January gloom

I am very much not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow. Maybe this really should be the year I find a new job. Not that that would happen in time to stop me having to navigate at least one more pandemic-hit term. I may have just had two and a bit weeks off but I'm not sure I have any more energy than I did at the start of the break.

And my dad is in hospital following a fall this morning and stroke symptoms. This is not good.

I am tired and sad and horribly worried and everything is Too Much.

Yes, I don't think even my mum is able to be there, and certainly none of the rest of us can visit him. I'm so glad I did get to go over there this weekend.

It may be worth scanning the jobs available, just to see what's out there. I do strongly suspect that you would have to work your full 3 months' notice; I certainly did when I left my last job.

I tend to keep an eye out anyway, but the 3 months' notice is definitely an issue, and it's also far from certain that a new job would actually reduce stress levels in the short to medium term.

Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear about your Dad. Obviously that would be worrying any time, but particularly right now when hospitals are over-stretched and contain other patients with COVID. I hope all pans out OK for him and that he makes a good recovery.

It sounds to me like you might need to be off work entirely for a little while, if the Christmas break hasn’t helped. I was in a similar situation 4 years ago and ended up working 4 days a week for about 3 months, which at least got me through the winter. Do take care; you’re a finite resource.
