I suspect a newer kindle would making skipping (and footnotes, which are also a pain) easier than my current one, which I think is nine years old (it's the kind with buttons, though not a keyboard). Certainly the Kindle app on my phone has better skipping functionality, so I often use that if I want to check back on something I've already read.

I miss browsing in bookshops, especially second-hand bookshops.
