I think if it's done well it can be really effective; quite a few recent SFF books have done that (NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, most notably, which has a similar Watsonian reason behind it). Also, I wonder if reading Choose Your Own Adventure books as a child has made me more open to it as just something some books do?
