[Fic] The Meaning of Unrequited
Because I seem to like taking my titles from Billy Bragg lyrics...

The Meaning of Unrequited
Love can be a real bitch sometimes.
There I was, galactic playboy. Love them and leave them, girls and boys in every spaceport. A few hermaphrodites too. What the hell, it was the 51st century. Most of the time, anyway.
And then I met him, and everything changed. It’s like seeing the sunlight on Earth for the first time when you’ve grown up on Pluto. I knew I’d follow him to the end of the Universe.
Which is kind of ironic, when you think about it.
We had such a short time. It doesn’t make sense to talk of days and weeks when you can travel through time and space, but it felt like about three weeks. I don’t think he ever really saw me as more than just some guy tagging along for the ride, but I had my hopes.
And then he left me behind. I could have gone anywhere, anywhen, started a new life, got a new ship. But I couldn’t imagine being anywhere in the Universe except where he was. The only thing that got me through the next hundred and thirty-nine years was the hope that one day I’d find him again.
‘It’s like when you fancy someone and they don’t know you exist.’ That says it all. Oh, he flirts, but he’s a cold bastard at heart, and he can’t imagine what he means to me, or to Martha. Or what he meant to Rose.
But if I lose him again, I’ll wait another hundred and thirty-nine years just to see him again. Hell, I’ll wait a thousand and thirty-nine if that’s what it takes. Because it’s worth it. I can’t die, and I only feel alive when he’s in the room.
